BIOFUELS THE WAY OF THE FUTURE
The Biofuels Association of Australia today said it was delighted with the level of support given to the
industry by Australias Federal Opposition.
Australia has the opportunity to be at the forefront of biofuel production and use with the perfect climate
for the generation of feedstocks that do not conflict with land used for food said Heather Brodie, CEO of
the BAA. The study proposed by the Opposition will be absolutely crucial in advancing the needs of the
industry and we welcome this strong commitment to biofuels.
Ninety eight percent of the energy currently used in the transportation industry still derives from fossil
fuels, and transportation is responsible for more than a quarter of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions.
Biofuels are capable of significantly reducing the carbon emissions of Australian transport, as well as
providing additional flexibility and supply to the Australian fuel market as worldwide peak oil supply is upon
us Ms Brodie said.
The overwhelming majority of cars and heavy transport can already take a blended fuel with either
ethanol or biodiesel. By 2020 most cars will be able to take E85 blended fuel and mainstream heavy
transport will be able to take a minimum of B50 blends or more. Our research, using figures from the US
EPA, has shown that we can reduce emissions by anywhere between 30 and 75 million tonnes of carbon
dioxide each year. A local supply chain also means less impact from international market volatility and
fluctuations on the pricing of fuels.
We need to galvanise investment into the industry and to do that we must have a clear and well grounded
regulatory and legislative environment to allow investment to take place for the long term. We must bring
about clear pricing signals and appropriate fiscal initiatives to encourage low carbon solutions.
Most importantly, it is absolutely imperative that the first generation biofuels market be strongly
established in order to build confidence in the industry and to institute a market base from which next
generation biofuels can learn and develop such as algal based biofuels.
We need to recognise that locally produced, environmentally sustainable and economically viable
transport fuels will actually be necessary in order to meet our petroleum demands in the future and as an
integral part of any plan to lower our emissions.
The Biofuels Association of Australia Incorporated is the peak industry body representing ethanol and
biodiesel producers, feedstock suppliers, technology providers, independent and major oil companies,
equipment manufacturers, mining and construction companies and others.
