Women in Climage Change
A National Forum Series Putting Gender On the Carbon Agenda
Women make an estimated 70% of purchasing decisions affecting household carbon footprint, are more likely than men to want serious action to protect the environment, and are amazing networkers for community causes.
Yet women also are hugely under-represented on the boards and senior executive teams of the business brands behind the products women shoppers buy for themselves and their families consumption that often comes at a rising cost to the planet.
Now a unique set of events - the Women in Climate Change (WICC) national forum series - is bringing together over 1000 women to capture a very female perspective on climate change and carbon action.
Ranging from top business and political figures, to local community champions, the WICC series and its all-women line-ups of speakers, panelists and even singer- songwriter entertainers will probe the challenge of unlocking long-term consumer behaviour change for a more sustainable Australia.
WICC starts with a breakfast forum at the Sydney Hilton on November 20th, just as the Senate will be debating the fate of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme in Canberra. Then WICC moves to Brisbane for a Parliament House luncheon on November 24th, followed by another breakfast at Melbourne's Hilton on the Park on December 3rd, just days before the UN climate summit starts in Copenhagen.
The series has been masterminded by the 1 Million Women campaign (www.1millionwomen.com.au) and is being presented with Green Capital (www.greencapital.org.au).
The 1 Million Women campaign exists to engage the women of Australia in climate policy issues and practical action to reduce CO2 pollution. It is committed to engaging 1 in 8 Australian women to cut a minimum of 1 tonne of CO2 pollution each in their daily lives, and already has signed up over 10,500 members since launching in May.
"Women want and need to know about climate change and what to do about it in their homes, workplaces and communities," says Natalie Isaacs, CEO of 1 Million Women, a mother of four and former skincare industry entrepreneur.
The WICC series will travel to other capital cities in the first half of 2010, culminating in a major event in Canberra before the next World Environment Day.
