Water Corporation puts the environment first
The Water Corporation has been recognised for its commitment to the environment by being granted
certification through SAI Global to the International Standard, ISO 14001, for Environmental
Management Systems. This initial certification covers areas of the Corporation with the biggest
environmental risks: Water Technologies Division; Customer Services Division; and part of the
Business Services Division. Certification is planned for the rest of the organisation by the end of
2009.
SAI Global, Australias leading certification body, provided the independent audit and assessment
services against the Standard. The Water Corporation can now proudly display the well-recognised
Five Ticks Environmental Standards Mark in the certified areas.
Around two million people throughout Western Australia benefit from the essential services that the
Water Corporation provides, including sewerage, drinking water and drainage services. These
services are susceptible to and can present unique environmental risks.
This is a major initiative by the Water Corporation to ensure high environmental performance, said
Sue Murphy, CEO of the Water Corporation. It reflects the Corporations commitment to managing a
sustainable environment across, what is arguably, one of the largest geographic areas in the world
covered by a single Environmental Management System.
The Environmental Management System (EMS) will help the Water Corporation in: compliance;
management of environmental risks; continual improvement; standardising environmental
management; and ensuring a robust, world leading system.
