Sustainability in agriculture a focus of landcare conference

More than 300 people will travel to Monto in September for the 2008 Queensland Landcare Conference.  The

theme of the conference is Sustainability by Design and sustainable agriculture features heavily in the conference

program.

Trevor Gleeson, Chair North Burnett Landcare Group said “we’ve brought together some timely presentations

focusing on sustainability in agriculture for this conference.”

“We have Donald Coventry joining us from the Southern Gulf discussing peak oil and what it means for rural

Australia.   Donald is CEO of Southern Gulf Catchments and volunteer convenor of the Conservation and

Environment working Group for Peak Oil and Gas and believes that peal oil is a more immediate issue for

regional Australia than climate change.”

“The Regional Group’s Collective will also join the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries for a shared

presentation on sustainable agriculture in Queensland.  Lea Diffey (DPI&F) will discuss the Sustainable

Agriculture Committee which provides strategic direction and coordination for sustainable agriculture initiatives.

And Sarah Hood from the Queensland Regional NRM Group’s Collective will discuss some of the Collective’s

work in engaging industry partners in sustainable agriculture projects across the state,”  Trevor said.

In addition, the conference program includes speakers covering topics such as soil carbon and the Australia Soil

Carbon Accreditation Scheme; improving wetland management in intensive industries through Farm Management

Systems and best practice; and a presentation from Neil McLeod at CSIRO on challenges for integrating

biodiversity goals into commercial grazing and mixed-farming enterprises.

Standard registrations for the conference close 31 August and more information is available online at
