MEDIA STATEMENT BY SAVE TWS COMMITTEE

Save TWS committee elected

At a mass meeting of members of The Wilderness Society (TWS Inc) today a

committee was elected to represent the interests of members who have

lost confidence in the current direction of TWS.

The existing TWS Inc Management Committee has failed to maintain

appropriate governance of this iconic organisation.

The Save TWS Committee, elected today at the Fitzroy Town Hall, is

committed to restoring unity and harmony to TWS.  Our primary objective

is to ensure TWS can continue its tireless work toward the protection of

Australia’s wild places.

The future of this unique organisation, founded to protect the magnificent

wilderness of south west Tasmania, has been cast into doubt by the actions

of the existing TWS Inc Management Committee.

The TWS members’ attending today’s meeting are deeply disturbed that

the reputation and effectiveness of TWS has been tainted by the actions of

the current management.

In particular we are disturbed by the decision to hold a secret Annual

General Meeting of TWS Inc.  This controversial meeting, held on 5

November 2009, involved only 12 of the organisations 46,000 members.

To restore confidence and credibility to the organisation, it is imperative

that a new valid Annual General Meeting of TWS Inc is urgently held to

provide all members with a genuine opportunity to discuss and determine

the future direction of TWS.

This is the only reasonable and credible solution to the crisis that threatens

the very future of TWS.

Members of the Save TWS committee are;
