MEDIA RELEASE 29 January 2009
New ways to save water when the heat is on
As the temperature soars across Victoria this week, Smart Approved WaterMark Australias
water conservation labelling scheme has good news: there are some simple new ways we can
all save water even when the heat is on.
Among the latest products and services to have received Smart WaterMark approval are a water-
saving device for the shower, a car cleaning cloth pack that uses no water, and a controller for
switching between rainwater tank and mains water supplies.
Saving water couldnt be easier than with the Every Drop Shower Saver, a unique paddle that
allows the flow of water from the shower to be paused without turning the taps off and on again, or
having to readjust the water temperature and pressure. Once fitted to an existing shower, the
device can be used to stop the water flow while soaping, shaving, shampooing and conditioning,
thereby reducing the volume of water used for each shower.
Squeaky Green Total Waterless Car Wash allows you to clean the exterior of a vehicle without
using any water. The pack includes specifically designed gloves and cloths for washing, waxing
and polishing, and all gloves and cloths are 100% biodegradable.
The RWP Rainwater Pump Systems provide automatic switching between mains water supply
and tank water so you can use rainwater for toilet flushing or machine washing. Mains water is
supplied as back-up in the event of no rainwater or a power outage.
In total, more than a dozen products were approved by the Smart WaterMark schemes Expert
Panel at their last meeting. The others include garden mulches, smart irrigation products, and a
pressure cleaner for boat washdowns [see the full list below].

The Smart WaterMark is only awarded to products and services that show advances in water
saving. The schemes Expert Panel, which includes seven independent experts drawn from the
gardening, plumbing, irrigation and water industries, continues to be impressed at the level of
innovation being used to develop solutions to our water challenges, says the CEO of Smart
Approved WaterMark, Mr Julian Gray.
Increasingly, people are looking for help when it comes to choosing water-saving products and the
Mark makes it easy to identify those that live up to their claims, continues Julian Gray.
More than 160 products and services now carry the Smart Approved WaterMark label, including
products for the garden, irrigation, and cleaning products, as well as pool covers and other
products for use around the home.
The Smart WaterMark is funded by the Australian Governments Water Smart Australia program
and supported by all states and territories. It was established by Nursery & Garden Industry
Australia, Water Services Association of Australia, the Australian Water Association, and Irrigation
Australia.

micro-organisms that convert organic waste (urine) to water and carbon dioxide. Mains water is
needed to clean and activate the tablet each day.
Gardening products and services
Grosorb, Baileys Fertilisers.
A soil wetting agent, which helps improve soil water absorption and reduce run-off, is available in
both granular and liquid forms
Baileys Moisture Mulch, Baileys Fertilisers.
Baileys Moisture Mulch is a recycled organic product that is compliant, and independently audited, to
Australian Standard 4454-2003. It reduces water use in the garden by protecting the surface of the
soil from evaporation.
Aquamor Mulch, Eclipse Soils Pty Ltd.
Aquamor Mulch is a composted, recycled plant material, which placed as a finishing layer over
landscaped areas reduces soil water lost through evaporation. Tests have demonstrated a 46.5%
reduction in soil water loss from evaporation. This is an unbagged, wholesale product.

An online database of over 1000 commercially available plants that will flourish in Perth gardens
when watered only once a week or less frequently.
Irrigation products and services

water supply system for the watering of new and established gardens under the Commissions
Medium Level Restrictions and Permanent Water Conservation Measures. The Guideline was
developed as a service to consumers and industry to help water users cooperatively meet water
conservation targets. It applies to both residential and non-residential premises.
Irrisys Pump Guard, Irrisys Pty Ltd.
The Irrisys Pump Guard monitors pressure, temperature, time and water flow functions of an
irrigation pump system. It has the ability to shut down the pump based on information it receives
and, in the process, reduce water loss.
PRS-Dial, Rain Bird Australia.
The PRS-Dial is a sprinkler valve that regulates outlet pressure of any commercial Rain Bird
solenoid valve regardless of incoming pressure fluctuations. It saves water by maintaining correct
sprinkler flows and avoiding excess pressures which could result in wind drift and excessive
evaporation.
1800 PRS, Rain Bird Australia.
The 1800 PRS sprinkler series maintain a constant pressure of 2.1 bar despite mains variations,
ensuring that the sprinkler does not mist or fog from high pressure. The sprinklers can also restrict
water loss if a nozzle is removed or damaged and equalise pressure in the sprinkler line to increase
spray uniformity.
