International Experts to Highlight CCS At Melbourne Conference
The eminent geologist and geophysicist Lord Oxburgh, is just one of a panel of global voices in Melbourne in November to discuss the role of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in mitigating global warming.
Lord Oxburgh is President of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association and former chair of the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee. This year he led the British Parliamentary inquiry on British climate change academics.
In Melbourne for the first National CCS Week, Lord Oxburgh will provide an overview of the global role that CCS can take in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The event will be opened by the Commonwealth Minister for Resources and Energy, the Hon. Martin Ferguson AM MP.
Keynote speakers include:
- Professor Will Steffen, Australian National University, recently appointed to the Australian Government's Climate Change Committee
- Paal Frisvold, Chairman of Bellona, the international environmental NGO based in Norway
- Keith Spence, former Chair of the Federal Government's Carbon Storage Taskforce; and member of the National Low Emissions Coal Council
- Hubertus Altmann from Vattenfall Europe, one of Europe's leading energy providers and managers of Germany's pilot CCS plant
The Chief Executive of CO2CRC and Chairman of the conference, Dr Peter Cook, said the program grew stronger as the conference neared.
"We have had a great response from international CCS networks," he said.
"This is an event of global standing, with a program that will deliver powerful insight into how this low emission technology can reduce our global carbon footprint.
"Commerciality underpins everything we do, so sessions explaining the economics and the practical deployment of CCS across the world have generated strong interest for registrants," Dr Cook said.
The National CCS Conference is an initiative of a consortium including the Australian Government, the Australian Trade Commission, Victorian State Government, the Global CCS Institute, CSIRO, CO2CRC, ACA Low Emissions Technologies Ltd., the Minerals Council of Australia, Brown Coal Innovation Australia and the International Energy Agency Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme.
The 2010 National CCS Conference is at the Park Hyatt Melbourne and runs from 28-30 November. National Carbon Capture and Storage Week runs from 28 November-3 December. For conference registrations and further information visit www.nationalccs.com.au
