Global CCS Institute Welcomes CCS Flagship Program Short-List

Tuesday 8 December, 2009

The Global Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Institute today welcomed the Australian Government's announcement to progress the development of four large-scale commercial CCS plants across the country.

Global CCS Institute CEO Nick Otter said "CCS projects around the world are facing commercial hurdles that can only be addressed by rapid support from government." "The progress of the Australian Government's CCS Flagship Program reflects the urgent need to advance projects, bring down costs and allow CCS to make a real contribution towards reducing emissions," he said.

To complement the Flagship Program, the Global CCS Institute will seek to collaborate with the short-list as part of its broader strategy to identify and address common barriers preventing the success of projects worldwide.

"These projects now join a list of global projects that we will bring together in some cases to tackle specific technical or policy issues, and in all cases to share knowledge, drive cost reduction and accelerate technological innovation," said Nick Otter.

A new global program to support CCS projects around the world was announced earlier this week as part of the Global CCS Institute's efforts to accelerate the deployment of this significant climate change technology.
