Explore the world of sustainable energy at RMIT
How do hydrogen or electric racing cars work? How could solar-powered
technologies solve Melbournes water problems? And what are the latest
developments in green and clean energy?
These questions and more will be answered when RMIT Universitys Sustainable
Energy Park opens its gates to visitors on Saturday, 6 June.
The Sustainable Energy Park, at RMITs Bundoora campus, is holding its annual
Open Day next weekend as part of celebrations for World Environment Day.
Dr John Andrews said visitors would have the chance to find out about sustainable
engineering programs at RMIT and talk to staff and students about their innovative
work on developing new renewable energy technologies, including solar-hydrogen
systems and solar thermal desalination.
Sustainable energy is the key to meeting 2020 and longer-term targets for
reducing greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding catastrophic climate change, he
said.
The hands-on projects our students undertake during their studies, often in
conjunction with industry partners, include working on solar desalination to help
provide solutions to our water supply issues and designing green cars that run on
solar power and hydrogen.
Sustainable engineering gives students a chance to really make a difference, by
finding technology solutions to the biggest environmental problems that confront
our world today.
Dr Andrews is the Program Director of the Master of Engineering (Sustainable
Energy), one of many Bachelor and Masters programs in RMITs School of
Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (SAMME) that incorporate
sustainable engineering.
The SAMME Sustainable Energy Park Open Day will include introductory talks and
guided tours of the many facilities and technologies at the park, including solar and
evaporation ponds, fuel cell systems, a weather station, a renewable energy
laboratory and a wind power generator.
