Expert comment on renewable energy and the nuclear debate

A new poll has found almost one in two Australians think nuclear power should be

considered as an alternative source of energy to help fight global warming.

The Age/Nielson poll found 49 per cent of Australians believed nuclear should be

considered as a potential power option, while 43 per cent were opposed.

Supporters say nuclear power is the only practical low-emissions alternative to coal

for generating baseload electricity – the minimum required by industry and

residential users.

Is nuclear power our only option for effectively combating climate change?

Can renewables reliably supply baseload electricity?

What are the latest technological advancements in renewable energy systems?

How can hydrogen storage be combined with solar and wind power to provide for

Australia’s energy needs?

RMIT University’s Dr John Andrews is an expert on renewable energy

technologies.

His research has focused on developments in solar, wind and wave hydrogen

energy systems and solar desalination.

Dr Andrews is the Program Director of the Master of Engineering (Sustainable

Energy) in RMIT’s School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing

Engineering.

He is available for interview on the issues related to renewable energy and the

push for nuclear power as an alternative source of low-emissions power.
