Earth Hour – Listen for the Ferry Horns

To help send a spectacular message to the world, Sydneysiders are being encouraged turn

their lights off at exactly 8.30pm on Saturday 27 March when they hear the Sydney Ferries

horns.

Ferry masters will blast their horns to help synchronise residents and businesses as they turn

off their lights in what has become a global event, this year focussed on drawing attention to

the nation’s ecological footprint.

“The world’s television cameras will be focussed on Sydney Harbour for the start of Earth

Hour and our collective effort to switch off lights will create great momentum for the rest of

the world,” said Scott Maclean from Sydney Ferries.

“To coordinate your involvement, listen for the ferry horns to make sure all our lights go out at

the same time.

“Hopefully, the loud blast will also remind those who have forgotten that it is time to switch off

and take a moment to think about the ecological footprint we each leave behind.

World Wildlife Fund Australia chief executive Greg Bourne said he was thrilled to have

Sydney Ferries’ active involvement in Earth Hour.

“This is a great initiative by Sydney Ferries and it will certainly help kick start the Earth Hour

campaign, which will also involve numerous other icons around the world like the Golden

Gate Bridge, London Eye and the Eiffel Tower.

“With ferries operating from Parramatta to Manly this gesture is sure to reach a lot of people

and will make for some great TV and radio coverage to raise awareness.”

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2 million people switched off their lights. In 2008,

more than 50 million people around the globe participated. In 2009, participation swelled to

hundreds of millions as 4,159 cities, towns and municipalities in 88 countries and many of the

world’s best known landmarks participated.

For safety reasons, Sydney Ferries will not switch off the lights at Circular Quay or on any

vessels.

Earth Hour starts at 8:30pm Saturday March 28 2009 (listen for the ferry horns).
