World Leaders produce first draft of global Suicide Note
According to Queensland Conservation, the announced global
deal from Copenhagen is a prime example of political compromise
ignoring scientific reality.
This deal supposedly confirms a commitment to keep global
temperatures below a 2 degree rise but fails to explain how, said
Toby Hutcheon, Executive Director of QCC
It is not possible to achieve this outcome with a 2050 goal. That will
be too late, emissions need to be stabilised by 2015.
The world had hoped for effective and binding agreements from
Copenhagen, what we have been given amounts to the first draft
of a global suicide note.
The world needs its political leaders to recognise scientific reality
and agree upon a binding deal that will deliver a safe climate for
the future. The Rio Earth Summit agreed to global action to halt
dangerous climate change nearly 18 years ago. We are still waiting
for that outcome.
We must have a binding agreement that stabilises emissions by
2015, targets 350 ppm CO2-e in the atmosphere (limits temperature
rise to no more than 1.5 degrees) and provides sufficient resources
for climate impacted developing nations, said Hutcheon
