MEDIA RELEASE PR31946
USIBA Continues to Shore Up Congressional Support for the U.S.-India Nuclear Deal
WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ --
As a follow-up to its September 11th briefing, which was the first open
briefing from the U.S. Administration to Members of Congress, staffers,
professionals in the field, and the community since India was given a waiver by
the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers' Group (NSG), USIBA continues to shore up support
in Congress for the US-India nuclear deal.
At a time when America is faced with an un-paralleled financial crisis and
Congress is focused on restoring confidence in the economic system, Chairman
Howard Berman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee made time for a brief
meeting yesterday to hear USIBA's concerns regarding the need for final passage
of this historic deal. So did U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.
"I commend Mr. Puri, President of USIBA, for the important work he has done
on the US-India nuclear deal, in cooperation with the Congressional Taskforce on
US-India Trade," House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said.
Considering what Congress is up against at this critical juncture, Chairman
Eni Faleomavaega of the Congressional Taskforce on US-India Trade said, "Given
that the passage of this deal now rests with Congress, not the Administration, I
commend USIBA for keeping this deal on the front-burner. House Majority Leader
Hoyer and Chairman Berman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee are key to the
passage of this deal, and it is a credit to the work that USIBA has done for the
past 2 years on behalf of the Indian American community that these powerful
leaders listened to USIBA's message again today."
Even in these challenging times, it is imperative to keep this deal alive if
we are truly committed to a strong US-India relationship," Mr. Puri said. "This
is why USIBA will continue to do everything it can to get this deal done before
time runs out, despite whatever challenges we may face."
