Seventy-one foot yacht sails to Newcastle coal blockade

A bright red, 71 foot yacht will sail into Newcastle Harbour at midday tomorrow, arriving for Sunday's People's Blockade of the World's Biggest Coal Port.

The Amsterdam registered proa Gaia's Dream will moor at Carrington before joining the mass community protest on Sunday that aims to prevent the passage of coal ships in Newcastle Harbour.

Yacht skipper Inigo Wijnen said: "Global warming is threatening our wellbeing and prosperity; most of all the lives of the very poor. We must begin to phase out the fossil fuels that are fuelling this crisis, and replace them with renewable energy. I will be very proud to have Gaia's Dream participate in this positive community action in support of a sustainable future."

Naomi Hodgson, spokesperson for protest organisers Rising Tide Newcastle said: "The protest on Sunday will be a mass community demonstration against the expansion of the coal industry, and in support of a transition away from coal into sustainable jobs."

"The most effective thing Australia can do to fight climate change is to stop the massive expansion of our coal industry. We need to phase out this industry, and replace it with jobs in sustainable industries."

Gaia's Dream, when under power instead of sail, runs on vegetable oil, with electricity provided by solar panels. It was built in Australia from Queensland plantation timber.
