RSPCA and Jennifer Hawkins Launch Petstars!

The RSPCA today announced the launch of Petstars, a social media talent competition supported by model and animal lover, Jennifer Hawkins. A pet talent contest, Petstars invites people to upload video or photos of their pets doing something clever or cute. Then viewers can vote on their favourites.

"Petstars is about sharing the things that make our pets special to us. Whether your pet's 'star quality' is sitting on cue, catching a Frisbee, collecting the newspaper or just looking cute, the RSPCA wants to hear from you," said Paige Gibbs, RSPCA NSW Spokesperson.

"Through Petstars we are celebrating the bond between people and their pets and with 63% of Australian households being home to at least one pet, we have a lot to celebrate. We're also delighted to have a 'real' star like Jennifer Hawkins supporting this fun event."

As an animal lover and mum to Coco (chocolate Burmese cat), Jennifer Hawkins was all too happy to get behind this exciting concept. "I grew up around animals. Pets are wonderful little creatures, they always give unconditional love. I know after a busy day if I come home and see Coco I always end up with a smile. She is such funny cat - she's either super affectionate or can just flip out and be quite hyperactive. I just love her.

"I've grown up with dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs - you name it. If you have as well, you know how precious these little ones are so jump online, get involved and support the RSPCA, it's a great charity."

Every year the RSPCA provides care to thousands of surrendered, stray and neglected animals, and RSPCA Inspectors investigate nearly 50,000 complaints of cruelty and neglect.

"The RSPCA relies on the community for 97% of its national funding so initiatives like Petstars are not only a great opportunity to engage our supporters in our work, but they are critical fundraisers too. It only costs 55c to vote, and this donation will help the RSPCA continue," said Paige.

Petstars will run for six weeks beginning 8 March 2010 with supporting TVC, print, mobile and digital.
