COALITION AGAINST DUCK SHOOTING

Media Release

       Thursday, 14 October 2010

Coalition Against Duck Shooting to target Labor MP Bronwyn Pike’s office at 12

noon today to encourage voters to put ‘Greens First and Labor Last’.

As part of its campaign to support the Greens in the Victorian election next month, a noisy rally will

be held outside Bronwyn Pike’s electoral office, 146 – 148 Peel Street, North Melbourne, at 12

noon today, Thursday, 14 October, 2010.

Campaign Director Laurie Levy today said that the Coalition Against Duck Shooting will be doing

everything possible to help the Greens win the four inner-city Labor seats of Melbourne,

Richmond, Brunswick and Northcote on November 27.

Today the waterbird conservation group will be targeting Labor MP, Bronwyn Pike’s electoral

office, handing out informative leaflets and urging residents to ‘Vote Greens first and Labor last’.

Leaflets will be distributed throughout the four hotly contested electorates prior to the election.

The Coalition Against Duck Shooting has been disappointed by the Victorian Government’s refusal

to follow WA, NSW and Queensland where Labor Governments have banned the recreational

shooting of native waterbirds,” Levy said.

“It is difficult to understand the priorities of the Brumby Labor Government.  For example,

Education Minister Bronwyn Pike cannot find the money to build a badly needed new school for

disabled children, yet $12.7million of hard-earned taxpayers’ money was handed over to shooters

in the last Budget, just to build a new shooting centre.

“A sadly out of touch modern day Brumby Labor Government continues to pander to shooters by

sanctioning the recreational shooting of native waterbirds.  In fact, there is no difference between

the government’s policy and that of the Liberal and National Parties.

“We would expect more from a Premier who claims to be an innovative leader.  In fact, this self-

proclaimed innovative Premier has the same conservative policy on native waterbirds that the

Bolte Liberal Government had 50 years ago,” Levy continued.

“An October 2007 Morgan Poll showed that 87% of Victorians want the recreational shooting of

native waterbirds banned.  Just last week an RSPCA and Coalition Against Duck Shooting petition

was tabled in Parliament with over 30,000 signatures calling on the government to ban

recreational duck shooting.

“Victorians have had enough.  It’s time to ‘move forward’ and the only way to do this is for the

public to vote Greens first and Labor last on November 27,” concluded Levy.
