World First Recycling Innovations Unveiled in Melbourne

The world's most advanced construction and demolition (C&D) materials recycling facility has been officially opened by the Premier of Victoria the Hon. John Brumby MP in Melbourne today.

The $45 million Western Metropolitan Recycling Facility, owned and operated by the Alex Fraser Group, brings together some of the smartest design and most innovative technology available to deliver a massive boost to C&D recycling capacity in Victoria.

According to the Alex Fraser Group Managing Director Jamie McKellar the new plant will recycle up to one million tonnes of C&D materials each year, nearly a third of Victoria's entire C&D recycling effort in 2007-08 from just one plant.

"We used the combined experience and expertise of our team to custom-build this plant to achieve new standards in productivity, operator safety, energy efficiency and product quality," he said.

"This will not only deliver good results of our company, but will help Victoria achieve new levels of resource recycling and ultimately help reduce the state's carbon emissions score on infrastructure developments," he said.

Some of the key features of this plant include the dual jaw crushers at the face, the comprehensive multi-layered separation system, state-of-the-art computerised technology for monitoring and control and the high capacity pugmill and load out system for faster turnaround of trucks.

With recent studies revealing the dramatic carbon savings to be made by using recycle concrete products councils and developers alike looking to make responsible environmental choices in their procurement so this boost in recycling capacity will further enhance the uptake of recycled materials in the future.

The Alex Fraser Group pioneered the C&D materials recycling industry in Australia and continues to be the country's largest recycler of C&D materials with an annual capacity of approximately four million tonnes.
