Tough fines for illegal dumpers urgently needed
Tougher penalties for illegal dumping of rubbish are urgently needed, Clean
Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan said today, following revelations there has
been a 60 per cent increase in the environmental crime over the past two
years.
Illegal dumping is an act of environmental vandalism. It is a deliberate act by
some people who avoid paying to dispose of rubbish responsibly and then
pocket the fees they saved, Mr Kiernan said.
A much tougher regime of fines is now necessary to ensure these few,
irresponsible people understand it is more expensive to dump then to dispose
of rubbish in landfill or at a recycling depot.
Most of the community is now responsible about rubbish and once aware of
the value of waste as a resource, such as for recycling, most people make
sure rubbish is not dumped in the environment.
Mr Kiernan said hat, unfortunately, often it is waste than can easily be
recycled, such as building and demolition waste, that ends up being dumped
by unscrupulous people.
Mr Kiernan also said it is critical that revenue raised from tougher fines is
funnelled straight back into environmental programs.
"We've also got to make sure that fine revenue is being used in environmental
protection and education.
