Lord Mayor to Launch Landmark 350.org Event this Weekend

The Lord Mayor will open the flagship 350.org Australian event this Saturday on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. Organisers plan to have thousands of Sydneysiders come together to spell out 350 and let the Australian Government know that they are committed to urgent action. Our time-zone means that this will be one of the first 350.org events in the world, and its iconic location ensures that the world will take notice.

The City of Sydney has thrown its support behind 350.org, a global movement calling for urgent action to reduce emissions.

350.org is holding a global day of action this Saturday October 24 2009, with more than 4,000 community actions at in more than 170 countries.

"Our Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan sets ambitious to reduce our emissions by 70% by 2030, using integrated actions and mature technologies including local, green power generation, building retrofits, simple transport improvements and dramatic increases in renewable energy," said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.

"It's critical we all work together for the future of our planet, and the City is proud to support Sydneysiders who will gather on Saturday to send a clear message to world leaders meeting in Copenhagen in December, and I look forward to joining them."

Hundreds of Australian events are planned this Saturday and dozens of communities in Sydney have organised events including bike rides, picnics, a sculpture in Newtown, a sustainable feast in Darlinghurst and the floating of 350 paper boats on the harbour.

350.org gets its name from the 350 parts per million identified by international scientists as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. Already CO2 makes up about 387 parts per million and achieving 350 parts per million requires urgent worldwide action.

The City of Sydney has unanimously endorsed sponsorship for 350.org Australia valued at $5,000 cash and up to $5,000 value-in-kind.
