Media Conference – Car Washes Protect Waterways

Ian Kiernan AO, founder and Chairman of Clean Up Australia, will be calling on the

community to consider our rivers, bays and beaches before they next wash their cars at

home.

The Australian Car Wash Association and Clean Up Australia are launching a joint

campaign to promote car washes that capture, clean and reuse water – rather than sending

pollutants such as lead, copper, zinc, oils

and suspended solids

into our stormwater

system, as is often the case when cars are washed at home.

In Victoria,

220 car washes have already registered under the program, investing in

technology and infrastructure that give their customers a clean car plus

the benefit of

helping care for the environment.

Mr Kiernan will inspect one such facility in Port Melbourne,

encouraging car owners to be

aware of the effect on the plant and animal life of our waterways when they wash their cars

on paved areas or in the streets.
