The Cats of Africa - free public lecture

RMIT University and Zoos Victoria are celebrating National Science Week (16-24

August) with a free public lecture from world-renowned “big cat” expert, Dr Luke

Hunter.

Born in Melbourne, Dr Hunter has been conducting fieldwork on large cats in

Africa since 1992.

He is the Executive Director of the New York-based Panthera Foundation,

formed to conserve the world's 36 wild cats species, and previously headed the

Great Cats Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Dr Hunter’s current projects include assessing the effects of sport hunting and

illegal persecution on leopards outside protected areas, developing a

conservation strategy for the African lion across its continental range, and the

first intensive study of wolves, striped hyenas, Persian leopards and the last

surviving Asiatic cheetahs in Iran.
