RSPCA AND OAKS DAY PUNTERS TO SHOW THEIR OPPOSITION TO JUMPS RACING
4
November, 2009: Horse lovers and Oaks day attendees will be able to put themselves
in the shoes of jumps racing horses, by collecting a free RSPCA supporter ribbon from
Melbourne City train station exists between 9.am and 12.pm tomorrow 5 November to
show their support for a ban on jumps racing.
The RSPCA has embarked on the campaign following results from an independent
consumer research survey showed an overwhelming support from the community to see
an end to jumps racing. The ribbons will allow punters to visually show their support for
a
ban on jumps racing whilst not having to forgo enjoying the festivities of flat racing
events.
Maria Mercurio, CEO, RSPCA Victoria, said: By wearing one of our ribbons to the races
the community is able to voice its opposition to jumps racing and communicate to the
industry that race goers do not want to see horses suffer while enjoying a day at the
races.
Every season we see a large number of horses suffer horrific injury, often resulting in
death during jumps racing events. Racing Victoria holds many successful carnivals that
do not feature jumps racing. For it to allow the continuance of this legalized cruelty is
against the wishes of the community, and we really want all those to attend to wear our
ribbon in support, Ms. Mercurio added.
Free supporter ribbons will be available from most city train station exits tomorrow,
Thursday 5 November for race goers.
