For Immediate Release

National Day of Unity for Kangaroos

In a remarkable display of unity, all Australian animal welfare/rights

organisations will come together to speak with one voice over the

Australian Governments approved killing of over 1 MILLION

Kangaroos

Where: Belmore Park, Sydney City (opposite central train station)

Time: 12:00 - 2:00pm

Date: Saturday 24th October

Representatives from Animal Liberation, Humane Society International, World League for the

Protection for Animals, ,Sydney Wildlife, Australian Society for Kangeroos and others will be

protesting against this proposed slaughter.

Gail Browning, coordinating of the event, states that 'When the picture of Sam [ the Koala ] and the

fireman flashed around the world the feedback was wonderful.......what would these same people say if

they knew about this drastic decision to ruthlessley kill such huge numbers?

We are quick to condemn other nations for their cruel treatment of animals, such as whales in Japan,

yet here we are about to set forth an action which will make Australia the world's biggest killer of

wildlife'

Project Manager for Animal Liberation, Angie Stephenson states 'Animal Liberation has an on-going

extensive and intensive investigation into the commercial kangaroo industry. In 2007 we took

evidence of the destructive nature of this commercial industry to Russia, France, Belguim and

Germany. Russia was the biggest revenue earner for this industry at the time, in August 2009 it banned

the import of kangaroo meat on the grounds of hygiene.

Russia has recently followed the lead of the EU which has banned all imports of seal products which

are the direct result of the brutal Canadian seal cull. We firmly believe that Russia will maintain the

ban on kangaroo products based not only on hygiene, but on welfare grounds as well

The commercial kangaroo industry should not be allowed to thrive in an increasingly welfare focused

society, the brutal killing of kangaroos, around 50% with a shot to the neck (illegal under the Code of

Practice for the humane killing of kangaroos), and then the legal bashing of any in pouch joey makes

this industry, with the reflection being on the whole of Australia, the largest, and one of the most brutal

slaughers of wildlife on the planet.'
